Weitra's 50 Heller notgeld is among the more obscure Austrian municipal emergency issues of the postwar period. Weitra itself is a small fortified town in Lower Austria's Waldviertel region, and its local administration — like hundreds of others across the former imperial territory — resorted to printing its own small-denomination paper when coin shortages made everyday commerce nearly impossible after 1918.
Local printing was the norm for these issues, and quality varied accordingly. Collector interest in Weitra notgeld has historically been modest, keeping most examples modestly valued despite genuine scarcity in top grades.
