Weitersfelden is a small market town in Upper Austria's Mühlviertel region, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the postwar Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local authorities scrambling to issue their own small-denomination emergency money — coins had effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted, and the central authorities couldn't keep pace with demand for low-value currency.
The FS prefix in the Pick reference places this firmly in the Austrian local issues catalog. Weitersfelden's series is modest by Notgeld standards — no elaborate collector editions, just functional municipal paper.
