Comments

One of hundreds of Austrian municipal emergency notes — Notgeld — issued in the chaotic years following the collapse of the Habsburg Empire, when small change simply disappeared from circulation. Weissenkirchen in der Wachau, a wine-producing market town on the Danube, issued these notes through the Marktgemeinde to keep local commerce functional during a period of acute coin shortage and rampant inflation.

Paul Gerin in Vienna was among the most prolific Notgeld printers of the period, producing runs for dozens of municipalities across Lower Austria. The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR1158Ie places this within a documented series, suggesting at least five distinct issues from this commune.
