Waldneukirchen is a small Upper Austrian market town, and this 50 Heller note is one of thousands of municipal Notgeld issues that flooded Austria between 1920 and 1922 — a direct consequence of the postwar coin shortage that left even the smallest transactions impossible without local substitutes. The Gemeinde commissioned the Vereinsdruckerei in nearby Steyr, a practical choice given the proximity, with design credit going to Paul Heizenberger.
Collector demand for Austrian Notgeld was intense almost from the moment of issue, which means many of these small municipal pieces were bought, never spent, and filed away — circulation wear is the exception rather than the rule.
