Walding is a small parish municipality in Upper Austria, and this note is one of thousands of Austrian Notgeld pieces issued by local authorities between 1919 and 1922 to address the catastrophic small-change shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg economy. What separates the Walding issue from purely functional emergency scrip is the involvement of a named designer — Hosner — a detail rare enough in parish-level Notgeld to be worth noting, though little biographical information on the artist has been documented.
Three signatories authenticated this note: the mayor, his deputy, and a municipal councillor, an unusually full complement of civic authority for a 50 Heller denomination.
