Waldburg is a small village in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized municipalities, it issued emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that followed World War One. The 50 Heller denomination was the workhorse of Austrian local Notgeld, practical enough for small transactions at a time when metal coinage had essentially vanished from everyday commerce.
Printed in Linz, this note belongs to the 1920 wave of Austrian municipal issues, by which point the Notgeld phenomenon had become almost systematic — local councils ordering small runs from regional printers, each valid only within the issuing commune.
