Spitz an der Donau was among hundreds of Austrian municipalities forced to print their own emergency currency — Notgeld — after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire left the new republic with a chronic coin shortage that persisted well into the early 1920s. These locally issued Heller notes were technically obligations of the issuing municipality, redeemable in theory but often simply spent into oblivion as small change.
Rudolf Weber designed several Wachau-region Notgeld issues during this period, and the Spitz series is among the more collected for its regional character. Björg Rieger's engraving work on this issue is less commonly documented than Weber's contribution.
