This is one of the Notgeld issues produced under Austria's postwar emergency currency arrangements, when municipal and commercial bodies across the former empire were authorized to print small-denomination scrip to alleviate the chronic coin shortage of 1919–1920. Spitz an der Donau, a small Wachau wine-producing market town on the Danube, issued this 50 Heller note through the Vienna printer Eduard Sieger — a firm that handled a significant volume of provincial Austrian Notgeld during this period.
