Vöcklabruck was one of hundreds of Austrian municipalities that issued Notgeld during the economic chaos following the dissolution of the Habsburg Empire, when small-denomination coinage had all but vanished from everyday commerce. These local emergency notes were a practical fix — printed quickly, often on whatever stock was available, and redeemable only within the issuing town's jurisdiction. E. Frietzel in Steyr handled a number of Upper Austrian Notgeld contracts during this period, a regional printer pressed into service by circumstance rather than prestige.
The JPR1116 series from Vöcklabruck is modestly scarce in collector circles, largely because small-town Austrian Notgeld was treated as disposable once the 1921–22 redemption windows closed.
