Comments

Vichtenstein is a village on the Inn River in Upper Austria, near the Bavarian border, with a population that barely exceeded a few hundred in 1920. That a municipality this small issued its own notgeld is less surprising than it sounds — Austria's postwar coin shortage was severe enough that thousands of communities, from market towns to isolated parishes, printed their own emergency small change between 1919 and 1922. What distinguishes Vichtenstein's issue is simply how local the whole operation was: printed by Langhammer in Linz, designed by a Linz firm, and signed personally by the Bürgermeister, Johann Breit.
