Vichtenstein is a village in Upper Austria so small — fewer than 300 residents even today — that its decision to issue Notgeld in 1920 says more about the chaos of post-imperial Austria than about any local economic ambition. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left rural municipalities scrambling for small-denomination scrip to cover everyday transactions that official coinage could no longer support.
B. Langhammer of Linz handled the printing, with design credit going to L. Haase, also Linz — a local production in every sense. The Bürgermeister signatory, Joh. Breit, would have been authorizing a note for a community that could fit inside a single city block elsewhere.
