Traismauer, a small market town on the Danube in Lower Austria, issued this 50 Heller note as part of the enormous wave of Notgeld that flooded Austria in the immediate postwar years. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system after 1918 left municipalities scrambling to produce their own small-denomination emergency money, since coins had effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply exhausted by wartime demand.
Guberner & Hierhammer operated out of the Wieden district of Vienna and handled a significant volume of municipal Notgeld commissions during this period. Whether Traismauer sourced this printing locally through a Lower Austrian intermediary or dealt directly with the Vienna firm is unrecorded.
