St. Thomas am Blasenstein is a tiny Upper Austrian market commune perched above the Naarn valley, and its 1920 Notgeld issue reflects precisely the kind of local emergency that drove hundreds of small Austrian municipalities to print their own fractional currency after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left everyday coin denominations nearly impossible to source. E. Priegel of Steyr was a regional job printer, not a specialist banknote firm, which is worth noting when assessing print quality on surviving examples.
Bürgermeister Fr. Ahomer's manuscript or stamped signature authenticated each note at the local level — the legal weight of a commune's Notgeld rested entirely on that official endorsement.
