St. Nikola an der Donau is a small market town on the Danube in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in the early postwar years, it issued its own Notgeld to address the acute small-change shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. The Carl Queiser printing house in Amstetten produced a substantial number of these local emergency issues for surrounding communities — it was a regional workhorse operation, not a prestige printer.
Designer H. Kugler is otherwise unattested in the major Notgeld literature, almost certainly a local commercial artist engaged for the series rather than a specialist brought in from Vienna.
