| Obverse description | Printed in red-brown and green on cream paper, the obverse is centred on a vignette of the St. Marienkirchen church tower set within ornate foliate scrollwork, with the municipal coat of arms on a heraldic shield to the left and a decorative wheat-sheaf motif within a matching shield to the right. The large denomination numeral '50' with the legend 'Heller' appears at the foot of the note, flanked by redemption notices in Gothic script. Sankt Marienkirchen bei Schärding is a small parish commune in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller Notgeld belongs to the vast wave of emergency small-change notes issued by Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921 to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metal coinage after the collapse of the Habsburg economy. The coins had been melted or hoarded; the new Republic couldn't replace them fast enough.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0910-50 places this firmly in the documented municipal series, though surviving quantities for individual village issues vary enormously — smaller communes often printed modest runs that were redeemed and pulped locally.
