Sankt Leonhard am Walde is a small Lower Austrian market commune, and this 50 Heller note is one of thousands of Austrian municipal Notgeld issues that flooded circulation after the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy left small communities chronically short of small change. The printer, F. Kielar of Amstetten, handled numerous local emergency issues from the surrounding Mostviertel region during this period.
Anton Rohrhofer's involvement as designer is the one detail worth pausing on — local artistic input was not universal in these issues, and attribution to a named designer is rarer than the notes themselves.
