Sankt Laurenz is a small parish community in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similar municipalities across the former Habsburg lands, it resorted to issuing its own small-denomination Notgeld in the early postwar years when federal coinage simply vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or swallowed by wartime disruption. The 50 Heller denomination sits at the practical floor of everyday exchange: bread, tram fares, small market transactions.
Johann Mayringer's signature as Bürgermeister provides the note's sole authentication. No bank backing, no treasury guarantee — just a local official's name and a municipal stamp.
