Comments

St. Johann in Tirol issued its own emergency small change notes — Notgeld — during the coin shortage that gripped Austria following the First World War. Municipal authorities across Tyrol turned to local printers rather than waiting on Vienna, which is why the Wagner imprint from Innsbruck appears on so many pieces from this region. Josef Hofinger's signature as Bürgermeister gives the note its official standing, thin as that authority was in purely monetary terms.

The paper is prone to edge splitting along the short axis, a known weakness in Wagner's lighter-weight stock from this period.
