St. Johann in Tirol was one of hundreds of Austrian municipalities forced into printing their own fractional emergency currency after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small-denomination coins essentially unavailable. The Wagner press in Innsbruck handled a significant volume of this Tiroler Notgeld work, and the output quality varies considerably across their municipal clients — some issues were carefully designed, others pushed through quickly.
Josef Hofsinger signed as Bürgermeister. His tenure coincided with the acute stabilization crisis of 1919–1920, before the Austrian crown's final slide into hyperinflation rendered Heller-denominated notes obsolete entirely.
