Sparbach is a tiny settlement in the Helenental valley southwest of Baden bei Wien, and its 1920 Heller note is a product of the Austrian Notgeld wave that followed the collapse of the Habsburg currency system. With the crown in freefall and small coinage effectively vanished from circulation, hundreds of Lower Austrian municipalities — many with populations in the low hundreds — commissioned their own emergency paper from local and regional printers. F. Seitenberg, operating out of Vienna's third district, handled a number of these small rural commissions.
The issuing authority here was the municipal government, not a savings institution or trade body — worth noting because Sparbach had almost no independent administrative infrastructure of its own.
