Schwarzach im Pongau is a small market town in the Salzburg valley, and this 50 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued when postwar coin shortages left municipalities scrambling for small-denomination substitutes. The Graphia press in Salzburg handled a significant number of these regional emergency issues, and the involvement of a named designer — Karl Schönsvetter — is worth flagging; many comparable small-town notes were produced anonymously from stock layouts.
