Schönbichl is a small municipality in Lower Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian and German communities during and after the First World War, when coin shortages made small-denomination emergency paper a practical necessity. Carl Dueiser of Amstetten handled a number of these local issues from the surrounding district, functioning less as a banknote printer than as a regional commercial press pressed into an unusual role.
Three signatories authenticated the note — the Bürgermeister's name now illegible, which creates occasional attribution headaches for researchers trying to pin down the precise issue window.
