Schönau im Mühlkreis is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller Notgeld was issued during the acute small-change crisis that gripped Austria in the years immediately following the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy. Coins disappeared from circulation almost entirely — hoarded, melted, or simply gone with the war economy — leaving municipalities across the former empire to print their own stopgap fractional currency.
The JPR prefix in the Jaksch catalog distinguishes these Austrian provincial emergency issues from the broader German Notgeld series. The "a" suffix on this reference indicates it is the first recorded variant within the 50 Heller denomination for this issuer.
