Austrian municipal notgeld from the post-WWI period, when the national government's inability to supply small coinage left hundreds of village councils printing their own fractional paper. Schönau im Mühlkreis, a small market community in Upper Austria, issued this 50 Heller note under that same practical necessity — not monetary ambition, but a shortage of pfennig-weight coin that made ordinary commerce difficult.

The Jaksc catalogue reference places this in the broader Upper Austrian series systematically documented by Josef Jaksc. Many notes in this regional grouping were printed in limited runs and redeemed within months, which makes survivors more common in uncirculated state than in genuinely worn condition — collectors snapped them up before most ever reached a till.
