| Obverse description | The obverse is printed in brown on cream paper and divided into three vertical panels framed by Gothic architectural motifs with foliate ornament. The central panel presents a Gothic arched gateway through which a vignette of a church tower and village is visible, surmounted by the Gothic-script inscription 'Rüstorf' within the archway spandrel. The left and right flanking panels each bear a large numeral '50' interwoven with a heraldic shield and scrollwork underprint. The denomination 'Fünfzig Heller.' is lettered in Gothic script along the lower border of each side panel, and the bottom margin carries the issuing authority text and validity date alongside what appear to be manuscript authorization marks. |

Austrian Gemeinde notgeld of this type emerged from a simple administrative failure: the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small municipalities with no practical access to low-denomination coinage, which had either been hoarded or melted. Rüstorf, a small rural commune in Upper Austria, issued its own emergency fractional currency like hundreds of others in 1920, authorized under the loose provincial frameworks that permitted such local stopgaps. The signature of Ulrich Ammer almost certainly represents the Bürgermeister at the time, as was standard for validating these municipal instruments.
The JPR prefix in the Jaksch/Pick reference places this firmly within the Austrian notgeld corpus rather than the more widely collected German series — a distinction that still affects collector demand.
