Rehberg bei Krems is a small market commune in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similar municipalities it issued Notgeld during the inflationary chaos following the collapse of the Habsburg Empire. The 50 Heller denomination here was printed by Bernhardt of Vienna's sixth district — a printer responsible for a large number of provincial Austrian emergency issues in this period, producing them efficiently but without particular artistic ambition.
By 1920 these notes were already becoming collectors' items almost as fast as they circulated. The Notgeld mania was real: some communes issued purely for the philatelic trade, though Rehberg's series shows no obvious signs of that cynicism.
