Raab is a small market town in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similar municipalities across the former Habsburg lands, it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — when small-denomination coins vanished from circulation during and after the First World War. This 50 Heller note was produced locally by Lanz in nearby Eferding, which served as the regional printer for several Upper Austrian communities during this period.
The designer credit to W. Voith is unusually specific for a note of this type and scale — most rural Austrian Notgeld went unsigned by its artist.
