Pernau is a tiny rural municipality in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian communities between 1920 and 1922 — a direct consequence of the postwar coin shortage that left small transactions nearly impossible to conduct. Karl Sturmeck's involvement as designer places this among the more considered local issues; Dusl in Wels was a regional press that handled a number of Upper Austrian Notgeld commissions during this period.
The mayor's surname — Himmelfreundpointner — is, against all odds, genuine.
