Payerbach is a small resort town in Lower Austria's Schwarzatal valley, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — to compensate for the near-total disappearance of coins from circulation during and after the First World War. The federal government never adequately replaced the coinage, leaving local authorities to fill the gap themselves.
M. Salzer of Vienna was a prolific printer of Austrian Notgeld, and Kurt Libesny designed for several municipal issues in this period. The JPR0725a designation places this within the Jaksch catalogue of Lower Austrian Notgeld, where the -50.2 suffix indicates a recognized variety within the 50 Heller denomination.
