Comments

Pabneukirchen is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this note belongs to the vast wave of municipal Notgeld issued across Austria and Germany in the early 1920s when small-denomination coinage disappeared almost entirely from circulation. Thousands of these local issues were produced, but the Pabneukirchen series is among the more obscure — printed by Briezel in Steyr, a regional press rather than one of the larger Viennese or German specialist houses that handled more elaborate Notgeld.

The designer credit to A. Ufmann is uncommon enough to be worth noting; most small-town Austrian issues of this type went uncredited. Three signatories — Bürgermeister Holzer alongside Vizebürgermeister Pilz and Steindl — which is one more than the two-signature format that dominated comparable issues.
