One of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced in the economic chaos following the collapse of the Habsburg empire, this 50 Heller piece from the small Upper Austrian market town of Oberneukirchen was printed by Franz Kling in Urfahr — then still a separate municipality on the north bank of the Danube, not yet incorporated into Linz. The Kling firm handled a substantial volume of regional Notgeld work during this period.

The Bürgermeister signature here is Franz Kafka — an entirely unremarkable Austrian official, and a coincidence that has occasionally caused catalog confusion with the Prague writer, who died in 1924 and held no such post.
