Comments

Natternbach is a small Upper Austrian village, and like hundreds of similarly modest municipalities, it issued Notgeld in the early 1920s to address the chronic small-denomination coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. These local emergency issues were technically unauthorized but widely tolerated — the central authorities had no practical means of supplying sufficient fractional currency, so they looked the other way.

The 1920 date places this squarely in the peak Notgeld production period, before the Austrian National Bank stabilization efforts curtailed local issues.
