Comments

Moosdorf is a small municipality in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian communities between 1919 and 1921, when chronic coin shortages forced local governments to issue their own fractional emergency money. These municipal emissions were authorized under a loosely coordinated framework but produced and designed entirely at the local level — which is why quality, survival rates, and typographical sophistication vary so dramatically from one village to the next.

The Bürgermeister's signature, recorded here as Esterbauer, was the legally required authorization. Without it, the note had no standing even as local tender.
