Losenstein is a small market town on the Enns River in Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept German-speaking Austria in 1919–1920 following the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. With the new Austrian Republic unable to supply sufficient small coinage, hundreds of municipalities issued their own emergency paper in heller denominations — legally tolerated, locally redeemed, and theoretically temporary.
Bürgermeister Josef Schörkhuber's signature gives the note its formal authority. Many Losenstein Notgeld pieces were later collected as regional curiosities rather than spent, which can make condition assessment tricky — some "circulated" examples never changed hands commercially at all.
