Comments

Leopoldschlag is a small market town in Upper Austria near the Bohemian border, and this 50 Heller note is one of the thousands of Austrian municipal emergency issues — Notgeld — printed during the inflationary chaos that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy. The disintegration of the dual monarchy in 1918 left local economies starved of small change, pushing even minor rural communes to print their own.

Signed by Josef Hölzl, almost certainly the Bürgermeister at the time. The JPR reference places it firmly within the Jaksch-Pick Notgeld cataloguing system for Austrian communes.
