Austrian municipal notgeld proliferated after the First World War as the central government failed to keep small-denomination coinage in circulation — by 1920, even villages were printing their own emergency pfennig and heller scrip. Grünau's issue was handled by Sommer of St. Pölten, a regional printer whose output served dozens of Lower Austrian communities during this period, giving the series a workmanlike local character rather than the elaborate collector-oriented designs some larger municipalities commissioned.
The Jaksc catalogue reference JPR0299-50 places this among the documented but modestly scarce rural issues — small print runs, high attrition through everyday use.
