Obverse description Green on pink underprint notgeld. A central oval vignette presents a fine letterpress view of the parish church of Grünau, surrounded by a low stone wall, trees, and a flight of steps leading to the entrance gate. The denomination numeral '50' appears in bold blackletter type within ruled boxes at the upper left and right corners, flanked by vertical decorative panels bearing stylised grain-ear and floral motifs. The title 'Gutschein' is set in ornate blackletter script across the top, and the issuing authority legend runs along the lower margin in a matching script.

The printer's imprint 'SOMMER, ST. PÖLTEN' appears in small roman capitals at the lower centre margin. The issuing authority signature line is rendered in a larger blackletter typeface below the text block.

Comments

Austrian municipal notgeld proliferated after the First World War as the central government failed to keep small-denomination coinage in circulation — by 1920, even villages were printing their own emergency pfennig and heller scrip. Grünau's issue was handled by Sommer of St. Pölten, a regional printer whose output served dozens of Lower Austrian communities during this period, giving the series a workmanlike local character rather than the elaborate collector-oriented designs some larger municipalities commissioned.

The Jaksc catalogue reference JPR0299-50 places this among the documented but modestly scarce rural issues — small print runs, high attrition through everyday use.
