Comments

Eschenau im Pinzgau is a tiny settlement in Salzburg province, and this 50 Heller note is one of thousands of municipal Notgeld issues that flooded Austria between 1919 and 1922 when chronic coin shortages — accelerated by wartime metal requisitioning and postwar monetary chaos — forced even the smallest communities to print their own emergency small change. The Pinzgau valley issues are among the more obscure in the Austrian series; Eschenau itself had a population small enough that print runs were almost certainly modest.
