Comments

Blindenmarkt is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this 50 Heller notgeld is typical of the municipal emergency currency that flooded Austria between 1919 and 1922 when coin shortages left communities unable to make change. Three signatures appear — the Bürgermeister, Vizebürgermeister, and a Gemeinderat — which was standard practice for giving these improvised instruments at least a veneer of official weight. Printed locally by Franz Rielar in nearby Amstetten rather than one of the larger Viennese houses, the production quality reflects the constraints of a small-town commission.
