Wolfern is a small market commune in the Steyr-Land district, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities it issued Notgeld during the severe coin shortage that gripped the former Habsburg territories after 1918. These tiny paper tokens were a local stopgap, authorized at the municipal level precisely because the new Austrian state lacked the infrastructure to supply fractional coinage quickly enough for everyday trade.
The Jaksch catalogue number places this firmly within the mainstream Upper Austrian emergency issues. Nothing in the record suggests an unusual print run, a known error, or a reissue — which means condition and the specific date stamp, if present, are what differentiate copies.
