The Katholischer Pressverein Linz issued small-denomination emergency money — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortages that gripped Austria following the First World War. Municipal bodies, businesses, churches, and cultural associations all stepped in to fill the gap, producing locally redeemable scrip in denominations too small for the collapsing state to bother printing. A Catholic press association doing so is unusual but not unprecedented; the organization had the printing infrastructure and institutional credibility to make the notes locally acceptable.
Upper Austrian Notgeld from ecclesiastical or quasi-religious issuers tends to survive in higher grade than municipal issues, likely because collectors targeted them early.
