| Obverse description | Red on cream unface notgeld printed in a Gothic blackletter and italic script throughout. The denomination numeral '50' is set at center within a fine guilloche oval underprint, flanked by the cursive legends 'über fünfzig' and 'über Heller' and the issuer text 'des Landes Steiermark'. The Styrian coat of arms — a white panther on a green field, rendered here in red intaglio — occupies the lower center. Validity and anti-counterfeiting notices appear at upper left and right respectively, with four manuscript facsimile signatures of issuing officials at the foot. |

Styria's 1919 emergency issues were a direct consequence of the postwar coin famine that swept across the rump Austrian state following the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. With small-denomination metal coinage effectively gone from circulation, individual provinces, towns, and even private businesses were legally authorized to produce their own Notgeld — and Steiermark was among the more prolific regional issuers.
The series to which this 50 Heller belongs circulated locally at a moment when the new Republic of German-Austria had not yet stabilized its currency arrangements, the Oesterreichisch-ungarische Bank still technically operational but trusted by almost no one.
