Puchberg im Machland is a small agricultural parish in the Perg district of Upper Austria, and this 50 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between roughly 1919 and 1921. With the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system, small change effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply gone — forcing hundreds of villages to print their own fractional emergency currency. Municipal stamp as the sole security feature was entirely typical of rural issues at this scale; forgery was rarely a practical concern when a note's territory of acceptance extended no further than the next parish boundary.
