De Javasche Bank had operated as the colonial central bank of the Dutch East Indies since 1828, and by the late 1930s its note designs were increasingly shaped by Dutch artistic sensibilities applied to Indonesian subject matter. Lion Cachet — a Dutch artist with genuine ties to Javanese decorative tradition — brought unusual authority to that assignment. His work for Enschedé drew on batik patterning and indigenous visual forms rather than the generic tropicalia that typically passed for colonial design.
This issue ran only through 1938–1939 before the Japanese occupation of 1942 rendered the entire Javasche Bank series obsolete. Wartime hoarding and subsequent destruction under occupation mean surviving examples in any honest circulated condition are harder to locate than the Pick listing implies.
