The guaraní was introduced in 1944 to replace the peso at a rate of 100 to 1, a redenomination tied directly to the Morínigo government's attempts to stabilize an economy battered by the aftermath of the Chaco War. The 50-guaraní denomination spent decades as a banknote before the chronic inflation of the late twentieth century rendered small-denomination paper impractical, pushing the figure into coinage. The shift to aluminium for this type reflects the denomination's negligible purchasing power by the time these pieces were struck.
