Haiti's 1970s commemorative silver program was issued under Jean-Claude Duvalier, who had assumed the presidency-for-life at nineteen following his father François's death in 1971. The two catalog varieties — KM#104.1 and KM#104.2 — differ in the fineness marking on the edge, a change made between the 1973 and 1974 strikings by the Haitian government's foreign minting contractors.
The mermaid subject draws on Lasirèn, the Vodou lwa of the sea, a figure with deep roots in Haitian spiritual practice and West African religious tradition carried over through the slave trade.
