This series straddles one of the most turbulent periods in modern Haitian history — the 1991 military coup that ousted Aristide triggered a crippling OAS and UN trade embargo, during which the central bank faced severe constraints on foreign exchange and importation of materials, including currency stock. Whether specific print runs within the 1991–1999 date range predate or postdate the coup and subsequent 1994 US military intervention is not always clear from face examination alone.
Giesecke & Devrient had supplied Haitian currency for decades by this point, and the Leipzig facility carried the work through the reunification period with no apparent interruption to the contract.
