| Obverse description | Green letterpress note on plain paper, with a decorative guilloche border framing the entire face. The denomination "Fünfzig Goldpfennig" is set in large Gothic blackletter script at centre, flanked by the numerals "50" on each side, with the gold parity notation "(4.20 Goldmark = 1 Dollar)" beneath. The issuer inscription "Handelskammer Leipzig" and date "November 1923" appear below the denomination, with two manuscript signatures above the printed titles "Vorsitzender" and "Syndikus" at the foot of the note. |

Leipzig's Chamber of Commerce issued this note during the hyperinflation of 1923, when municipal bodies, commercial associations, and private firms throughout Germany were legally permitted to produce their own emergency currency — Notgeld — to compensate for the Reich's failure to supply adequate small denomination coinage. The Handelskammer's decision to denominate in Goldpfennig rather than in inflating Papiermark was deliberate: gold-indexed Notgeld offered a stable reference point when the paper currency was losing value by the hour.
Julius Klinkhardt was primarily a Leipzig-based educational and academic publisher, not a specialist security printer. Their involvement here reflects how completely the hyperinflation crisis exhausted conventional printing resources.
