The French Treasury's 50 Francs of 1945 belongs to a family of liberation-era notes produced in the United States for use in France following the Allied landings. Forbes Lithograph, a Boston commercial printer with no prior central bank relationship, was contracted alongside other American firms to produce currency at speed — security printing standards were necessarily compromised in favor of volume and logistics.
These notes entered circulation under the provisional government and were withdrawn relatively quickly as the Banque de France reasserted control over the money supply. Forbes-printed issues are identifiable and distinguishable from the parallel Allied Military Currency series produced under different contracts.
