The Comoros declared independence from France on July 6, 1975 — a unilateral declaration by the island of Grande Comore that France eventually recognized, though Mayotte voted to remain French and still does. The Institut d'Emission des Comores issued this essai as part of the standard pre-circulation trial striking process used by the Paris Mint for francophone territories, producing small quantities in nickel for approval and archival purposes before authorizing the production dies.
Essais from this transition period rarely entered general circulation, which explains why survivors appear in grades inconsistent with a 50-year-old coin.
