Additional information

Mali struck this coin — along with the rest of its 1967 gold proof series — without any intention of circulation. The newly independent republic had abandoned the West African CFA franc in 1962, establishing the Malian franc under Keita's socialist government, but the economy deteriorated sharply enough that Mali was forced to re-enter the CFA zone in 1967, the same year these pieces were dated. The gold series was almost certainly produced for foreign exchange revenue and collector sale rather than domestic monetary use.

Keita himself was ousted in a military coup just two years later, in November 1968.
